The UAE is fostering innovation and creativity as part of its strategy to use technological solutions to achieve sustainable development, Dr Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, has said.

 

In a statement to mark the Arab Environment Day, which falls on Oct.14 every year, the minister said that the declaration of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2012, under the theme “The Future We Want’’, has urged governments to strengthen and reform the institutional frameworks to introduce environmentally-friendly technology, R and D, and innovation to deliver many purposes including green economy.

 

The Arab Environment Day will be observed this year under the theme ‘’Green Technology towards Sustainable Development’.

 

The minister said the UAE Vision 2012, inspired by the national action plan launched by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlights the growing role modern technology and creative solutions can play in the protection and sustainability of the environment.

 

He added that the long-term national initiative to build green economy in the UAE under the slogan “A green economy for sustainable development”, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, stressed on the development and promotion of green technology and systems in transforming the national economy into a diversified, sustainable and low-carbon economy that achieves sustainable development for the present and future generations. Green technology is one of the major six fields in the Green Economy Initiative, covering a wide range of legislations, policies, programs and projects.
