London will play host to the final race of the inaugural Formula E all-electric racing series.

 

The 10 race championship is set to kick off in Beijing on 20th September 2014 taking in 10 dates in cities including Monte Carlo, Los Angeles, Miami, and Berlin before concluding in London on 27th June 2015.

 

All Formula E events will feature a free practice session, qualifying session, one-hour race and live music concert taking place in city centre locations on a single Saturday.

 

The Olympic Park and the streets around Wembley stadium have both been rumoured to be in the running for the event, but a Formula E spokesman said that while a site was close to being confirmed, had not yet been finalised due to "red tape."

 

The provisional calendar also includes races in the Malaysian city of Putrajaya, the beach resort of Punta del Este in Uruguay, as well as Buenos Aires and Hong Kong and will now be considered by the FIA before being finalised during the December FIA World Motor Sport Council.

 

Rome, Rio de Janeiro, and Bangkok, which were all on an earlier provisional list of host cities announced in March, will instead be considered as candidate cities for future Formula E seasons.

 

The FIA-backed Formula E series aims to promote electric motoring to urban consumers across the globe.

 

For the inaugural season teams will use the Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E car, built by French-based company Spark Racing Technology, together with a consortium of leading manufacturers McLaren, Williams, Renault and Dallara.

 

However, in the 2015 season teams will be encouraged to develop their own vehicles, potentially coming up with innovations that can drive improvements in production electric cars.
