Ministry honours Qatari for solar energy efforts 23/9/2013
The Ministry of Environment (MoE) has honoured a citizen, Hamad Suleiman al-Ghafiri from Al Hadarma, for his efforts in utilising solar energy, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

Through his eco-friendly initiative, al-Ghafiri has been harnessing solar energy at his residence for a variety of purposes, including growing corn and barley to feed cattle, illumination of the house and operation of electrical devices, according to the report.

Al-Ghafiri was honoured on behalf of the MoE by Omar Salem al-Niaimi, director of the Department of Environmental Protection. He was given a plaque and a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his efforts.

Al-Niaimi said the honour for al-Ghafiri was “in accordance with the ministry’s policy to encourage all residents of Qatar to benefit from clean and environment-friendly sources of energy as these would help protect the environment and contribute to the prevention of waste of natural resources in the country”.

The initiative by al-Ghafiri is significant given the importance being given by Qatar to tap solar energy.
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has been charged with the task of delivering a 200MW solar energy plant project by 2020.
