Tunisia bans production of non biodegradable plastic bags 5/9/2022
The Tunisian Ministry of Environment announced it will stop production of certain types of plastic bags "banned for the internal market" because they are not biodegradable. The ban started as of 1 September.

The decision was taken at the end of a working session, in the presence of representatives of the plastic producers Chamber of the Confederation of industry, commerce and artisans (Utica), with the purpose of implementing the governmental decree n. 32 of January 2020. This decree had set the types of different plastic bags whose production, import and distribution in the Tunisian market is forbidden.

A note by the Ministry of Environment stated that during the course of the working session, a decision was made to continue to coordinate according to international guidelines and to prepare an international document that will end plastic pollution by 2024. Tunisia has been fighting against the proliferation of non biodegradable plastic bags for years.
