Cow manure will power a renewable energy plant in Japan 22/7/2022
Anaergia, a Canadian-based company, partnered with Japanese firm Toyo Energy Solution to build a biogas plant that digests cow manure into renewable energy in Kasoka, Okayama, Japan. Anaergia is known for providing clean energy solutions using organic waste across the world. In an effort to make the most out of the energy crisis and find clean energy solutions, Toyo Energy Solution wants to set up a purely organic energy plant. The two companies have made public their partnership through a press release.

The plant is expected to cut animal and fossil fuel-based CO2 emissions by 13,500 tonnes, equivalent to removing 2,900 cars from the road for a year. In a statement, Andrew Benedek, chairman and CEO of Anaergia, said that the plant will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2 and methane, which are produced from manure and food wastes.

“Wastes such as manure, sewage biosolids and food scraps create two-thirds of all point-source emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas that is 85 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Stopping these methane emissions from waste must be a central tactic in curbing global warming,” said Benedek.

In the project, 250 tonnes of anaerobically digested cow manure will be used as biogas to power a heat and power generator system. The biogas will generate up to 1.2 megawatts of renewable electricity, which can power up to 2,200 Japanese homes each year.

“This new bioenergy plant will not only help Japan reduce methane emissions from manure, it will also reduce the need for LNG to generate electricity,” Benedek added. “We look forward to building many more plants in Japan with our partner Toyo Energy Solution Ltd. to help the nation meet its carbon neutrality goals.” (inhabit via Interesting Engineering)
