Vulcan Solar Park is the first of its kind in Canada (VIDEO) 14/6/2016
The town of Vulcan, Alta. is embracing the future with the launch of Canada's first solar park.

Vulcan is mostly known for being a mecca for "Star Trek" fans, because it shares a name with television character Spock's race and home planet.

Now, it's embracing more than just sci-fi with a unique scientific enterprise that will generate renewable energy while educating the public on solar power.

“It’s kind of neat to say that we are boldly going where no man has gone before,” Vulcan Mayor Tom Grant told Global News.

The solar park was unveiled on Saturday as part of the town's "Spock Days" event.

The park, which has been in development since 2012, will be a mixture of public green space and solar panels.

Some of the panels were designed by students to look like grain elevators, in homage to the area's agricultural past.

"The Town of Vulcan chose to build the Vulcan Solar Park — the first of its kind in Canada — around the concepts of energy efficiency, aesthetics, and energy production," Grant said in a release.

The project, which was paid for by a mix of provincial grants and corporate funding, will generate about 23.5 kilowatt hours for the community.

"The transition to renewables is going to help this town live long and prosper," said Dave Borins of Bullfrog Power in an interview with CTV News. (The Huffington Post)
