The first of four 210 meter high wind turbines has been erected at an onshore wind farm in the south of Finland.
The Tyrinselkä wind farm, developed by Finnish firm Tuulivoimaytiö Pohjoistuuli Oy, will ultimately comprise of four of the Nordex N131/3000 wind turbines.
At around two-thirds the height of London's tallest building, the 3MW onshore turbines are among the tallest to yet be installed anywhere in the world, with a hub height of 144 meters and tip height of 210 meters.
Andrej Sršeň, managing director at Tuulivoimaytiö Pohjoistuuli Oy, hinted more giant turbines could be installed in the future.
"Tyrinselkä wind farm is a pilot project under construction in our Finnish wind power portfolio of more than 30 turbines," he said in a statement. "We have been working on this project for three years and are happy that these modern turbines will start producing electricity for local people in a sustainable way very soon."
The project was supported by Glasgow-based renewable energy consultancy SgurrEnergy, which has been a consultant on the 12MW farm since its early stages and was appointed as the owner's engineer in early 2014.
"With its six tower sections and 64.4 meter long blades, it is tremendous to see the sheer scale of the wind turbines installed this week," said Katherine Blum, project manager in SgurrEnergy's implementation team, in a statement.
The installation is expected to be connected to the grid in late 2016. (businessGreen)
