UAE launches US$1m competition to solve water scarcity 22/3/2016
A US$1 million (Dh3.68 million) competition to find sustainable answers to water scarcity problems has been launched to mark World Water Day on March 22.
 
The UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia) announced that it was accepting applications for the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award.
 
The award is split into three categories. The innovative projects award is worth $500,000.
 
The innovative research and development award is worth $400,000 and has two categories: national institutions and international institutions, and the innovative youth award is worth $100,000.
 
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, chairman of the board of trustees of the foundation, said: “This award supports the efforts of Dubai and the UAE to help alleviate the suffering of the needy around the world.
 
“The foundation is working to provide water to the disadvantaged and distressed."
 
Use of technology, design, environmental alignment, creativity, innovation, health and safety, and sustainability by competitors will be evaluated.
 
Applicants for the innovative youth award must address the scarcity of drinking water. Applicants must be below the age of 40 and the project must be developed and implemented by individuals only. See suqia.ae. (The National)
