Hyundai goes electric for Geneva 26/2/2016
After two months of teasing, Korean carmaker Hyundai will be unveiling its entire, three-model Ioniq range of green cars at this year's Geneva Motorshow.

The company has already revealed the mild hybrid version of its new car, but next week will mark the debut of a plug-in hybrid model plus the company's first plug-in electric vehicle.

The Ioniq Electric will boast a 165km/h (102mph) top speed and a range of 155 miles (250km) between recharging stops, putting it on par with the new Nissan Leaf, unveiled earlier this week.

However, the Ioniq offers more space and practicality, plus a raft of tech and active safety systems.

It boasts support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offers Tom Tom live services and will wirelessly charge a smartphone. Emergency autonomous braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist and intelligent cruise control are all available as standard or options.

The idea behind the Ioniq range is to offer customers three different approaches to greener motoring. For those that feel too anxious to take a chance on a full EV car, the plug-in hybrid version offers all of the same levels of equipment and safety systems and a range of 50km (31 miles) on electric power alone.

However, it also has a 1.6-liter petrol engine for long-distance journeys and to help recharge the batteries when a power outlet is unavailable. Hyundai says that the car's CO2 emissions are just 32g/km.

These two new editions will sit alongside the Ioniq Hybrid, which is unable to travel purely on battery power but with the electric and petrol motors working in tandem offers a 185 km/h (115mph) top speed and CO2 emissions of 79 g/km.

With the Ioniq range, Hyundai is the first car company to offer three very different types of greener car but in the same external package. Each car is exactly the same shape and size, and promises similar driving characteristics.

"Ioniq is an important step forward for our brand. We are bringing a unique new approach to e-mobility," said Jochen Sengpiehl, Vice President Marketing at Hyundai Motor Europe, "and we're making it accessible to more customers."

The new models also make Hyundai the only car company in the world to have a hybrid, full electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell car in production. (AFP Relax News)
