Wasit Wetland Reserve has recorded a first in the northern emirate with the hatching of two endangered pink-backed pelican chicks.
Officials said the births reflected the efforts of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) to protect at-risk species.
EPAA in Sharjah chairman Hana Saif Al Suwaidi said the Wasit Wetland Reserve, established in 2007, provided a safe haven for migratory birds when they crossed the emirate en route to warmer southern conditions from cold northern climates in winter.
“The new Wasit Wetland Centre is an important addition in protecting rare animals and birds and in giving scientists and researchers the opportunity to study the life and breeding of birds and learn how to protect them from extinction.”
The pelicans rest during the breeding season for nesting before completing their migration to Africa. (The National)
