What does the Paris Agreement mean for you? That's the question the UN's climate body UNFCCC is asking people around the world in a new social media campaign designed to drum up support for the treaty ahead of a high-level signing ceremony in New York in April.

 

The campaign, which launched on Wednesday and runs until February 28, calls on politicians, negotiators, celebrities, and members of the public to record a short video explaining why the global deal on climate change is important to them. Videos are uploaded onto sites such as Facebook or Twitter with the hashtags #means4me and #ParisAgreement.

 

One of the first to post a video was the UN's top climate official Christiana Figueres, who described the Paris deal as a "landmark achievement" for the world. "For me, the Agreement means a resilient, low-emission and sustainable future full of opportunity for my two daughters, for every young person today and for generations to come," she said.

 

Meanwhile in his video, Peruvian Minister of State for the Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal Otalora urged governments to ratify the treaty in New York in April. "Go together to sign the Paris Agreement and let's give to current and future generations a better planet - more liveable, healthier and with fewer threats," he said in his short video.
