The Ministry of Energy has launched an initiative to develop an application that can calculate the cost of solar energy that can be utilized on roofs of houses in the UAE.
The initiative came on the sidelines of the ministry’s participation in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016.
Dr. Matar Hamed Al Neyadi, Undersecretary of the Ministry, said that the initiative aims to develop an application that can calculate the extent to which houses can benefit from solar energy. This will help consumers install photo voltaic (PV) solar cells on the roof of their house which will help reduce electricity consumption as well as the volume of emissions.
“The idea behind the application is to use a geographical database that depends on satellite images, which will enable users to locate their houses and calculate the available areas for installing the PV cells on their roofs.” Al Neyadi said.
Such an application will boost prospects of individual consumers wanting to switch to solar energy as an option for domestic use.
Al Neyadi added, “The initiative will provide users with the necessary information to help them take the appropriate decision [before they use solar energy].”
In the medium and long term, such a facility will lead to effective results that would benefit society, Al Neyadi said.
The ministry has prepared all the necessary programmes, devices and tools to develop the application and will work along with the concerned authorities to ensure the success of the initiative.
These steps of the ministry are in alignment with its efforts to enable the UAE to stay on course for its Vision 2021, with sustainability, diversification of energy sources and encouraging residents to use solar energy applications as its driving forces. (Gulf News)
