Heathrow's London Marriott has drastically cut its water use, after installing a smart dish-washing system which uses high pressure water and small granules to blast pots and pans clean.
A six month trial measuring water waste from the hotel's kitchen sinks revealed that more than 6,000 liters of water is flushed away every day. But during a trial of the Granuldisk washing system the hotel's kitchens have saved 5,664 liters of water, which would amount to an annual saving of up to two million liters – a saving of more than 90 per cent.
The system also saves more than 200 kWh of energy every day and more than 11 liters of chemicals, the company said.
General manager Ron Vos said the hotel installed the system as part of its efforts to minimize waste on the premises.
"We're pleased to be the first of the Marriott UK hotels to trial the technology and we are sure our guests would be delighted to know we care about our impact on the environment," Vos said in a statement.
"Sustainability initiatives are at the forefront of our ethos and I can see the Granuldisk technology being a future option for other hotels within the Marriott group." she added.
The system is the latest in a series of measures that hotel has installed to reduce its carbon footprint.
Last month, the firm announced it was participating in one of the first European soap recycling schemes, where soap that is discarded by hotel guests is repurposed in hygiene kits that are distributed to impoverished communities around the world. (businessGreen)
