Red tide activity detected in regional waters 20/11/2015
The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water announced that it has detected red tide activity off the coastal areas of the country over the past couple of days.

The ministry said that satellite imagery displayed red tide activity in the country’s regional waters overlooking the Arabian Gulf. The activity was spotted in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Kalba, Fujairah and Khor Fakkan.

The ministry’s technical and specialized team worked on surveying the activity and collecting samples from various areas of the country’s waters in Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in order to monitor and glean the types of algae that are causing the algal bloom phenomenon.

The ministry pointed out that algal bloom tests revealed that it is not harmful, unlike the red tide activity in 2008-09 that killed fish and marine life. (Gulf News)
