Rewards for reducing household waste 22/6/2015
Households in Dubai’s Al Mizhar area that generate the least amount of trash will be awarded as part of a Ramadan sustainability campaign by Dubai Municipality.

Some 900 homes in the area have been visited by officials who explained the rules and background of the contest. Winners will be revealed and awarded at a later stage, details of which will be conveyed later.

The development follows the municipality’s launch of a campaign for “sustainable homes through smart waste management”, which coincides with Ramadan this year. It seeks to raise public awareness on the need to reduce waste and recycle and reuse materials as much as possible.

Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director, Waste Management Department, Dubai Municipality, said teams were sent to visit residents and explain the campaign and contest to them. They also handed out brochures containing more instructions.

Sponsored by private waste management company Averda, the contest aims to minimize waste, which will be tracked through an electronic system for each participating unit. The competition will feature many activities and events, including field visits and tips on reducing all kinds of household waste. The municipality said waste rates should not be allowed to increase, especially during Ramadan.
