Stray animals are to be fitted with glow-in-the-dark vests to reduce accidents on the emirate’s roads, under a plan being drawn up by Umm Al Quwain police.
The initiative, launched with Umm Al Quwain Municipality, aims to make the animals more visible at night.
A meeting was held between municipality and police officials under the slogan “protecting road users from stray animals” to discuss the plans.
Police said they will work with Animal Welfare to determine a way of implementing the project. It remains unclear what specific animals will wear the vests.
Authorities in UAQ said a location had been found where Animal Welfare could gather the stray animals, care for them and provide them with food before releasing them.
Police said the idea for the fluorescent jackets stemmed from a desire to “protect the natural environment and all species within it”.
