Denmark revealed that it set new wind power records last year as wind energy's share of the electricity mix rose to 39 per cent, an improvement on the 33.2 per cent share recorded in 2013.
The strong performance was expected, as around 100 new offshore wind turbines were brought online throughout the course of the year.
Climate Minister Rasmus Helveg Petersen said: "We have set a one-of-a-kind world record. And it shows that we can reach our ultimate goal, namely to stop global warming."
A series of national annual renewable energy records are likely to be confirmed in the coming weeks, as grid operators assess the impact of continued investment in new clean energy capacity.
