More than 200 women from rural and urban areas will be trained on ways to conserve water at a new association that was launched on Monday.
The Water Wise Women Association seeks to raise awareness on the country's water and environment challenges and guide women on ways to protect the environment and save water, according to its director, Arwa Makhzoumi.
"The association will also economically empower women in the water field and implement training programmes," Makhzoumi said during a ceremony at the Water Ministry to announce the official launch of the association.
Highlighting the role of women in changing mindsets and behavior that cause water loss, she added that the association was established as part of the Water Wise Women's Initiative (WWWI), launched in 2007.
The WWWI is implemented under the umbrella of the Water Ministry and the Water Authority of Jordan, with the support of the German Development Cooperation.
Several courses were held under WWWI to build sustainable awareness and to spur behavioral change at the local level in water resource management.
Water Ministry Secretary General Basem Tulfah underscored that women and housewives play a major role in the ministry's quest to stop violations on water resources and networks.
"Mothers, wives and daughters can change negative behavior in their households regarding illegal use of water and violations on the water network... they have the power to guide their family members," Tulfah said at the ceremony.
