In the near future, pomegranate peel may be used as source of drugs for two untreatable diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Scientist in two years of research found that the people who are infected with diseases, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's could get help by punicalagin, a compound removed from pomegranates.
Dr. Olumayokun Olajide from the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire explains that punicalagin could reduce inflammation in some particular brain cells called as micrologia. He also found the painful inflammation that go with illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis can be cured with the same drug.
Olajide advised to take juice products that contain real pomegranate that have about 3.4% of the wonder compound punicalagin.
Most of the anti-oxidant compounds are present in the outer layer of the pomegranate and not in the soft part of the fruit, he added.
There is no treatment for Alzheimer's but the new compound could help in preventing it and can slow down its development.
