In an attempt to increase green spaces in Jeddah, the Jeddah Municipality plans to distribute plants to residents for free with the aim to involve them in making the city greener by growing the plants in their homes.
The municipality will launch a one-week plantation program on Sunday where it is scheduled to distribute over 25,000 nursery plants to the city's residents.
Besides the Jeddah Municipality headquarters, plants will be distributed at various leading shopping malls.
Jeddah Municipality is keen on promoting urban forestry which includes the urban environment and the role of trees in combating pollution, urban greening projects, future strategies, species selection for urban forestry, upkeep and management of urban forestry, and the establishment and management of botanical gardens and parks in urban areas.
The municipality has a Jungle project in East Jeddah where it has 160,000 trees planted over an area of 2 million square meters at the cost of SR30 million. The trees are irrigated with treated sewage water and primarily aim to prevent pollution and maintain a green environment. The jungle has 12 varieties of plants but the most popular is teak which has a good market value.
The trees in the area are provided with 10,000 cubic meters of water every day. There are plans to expand the East Jeddah forestry project for both commercial purposes as well as to provide a green environment for the city.
