Winnipeg deep freeze colder than Mars 3/1/2014
Colder than the North Pole and even Mars, Winnipeg, Canada rang in the New Year at temperatures that dropped to a low of -37.9 C (-36.22 F).

The only time New Year's Eve was colder was in 1884, when the temperature dropped to -38.3 C (-36.94 F) and with the wind-chill factored in, it felt like -48 C (-54 F), reports the Winnipeg Sun.

Winnipeg's Manitoba Museum went to Twitter just before 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 reporting, "According to the Curiosity Rover, Mars reached a maximum air temperature of -29°C today. Winnipeg's high was -31C."

Earlier in the week the entire province of Manitoba was under an extreme wind-chill warning which lifted in the southern and central parts of the province. Despite the extreme cold, Manitobans in Winnipeg enjoyed most of the New Year's Eve activities that had been planned, reports CBC News Manitoba.
